Basement Water Problems in Tallmadge, OH

The form asks to be contacted and nothing more. An independent contractor picks up the request, gets in touch, sees the basement for itself and lays out the options it thinks fit. Damp block after a thaw or a musty corner can have several causes, and none can be pinned down from a web page.

This site is a go-between that only passes your request along. It is no contractor, plumber or tradesperson of any kind, holds no Ohio trade license, and never bids on, inspects or performs work. Contractors may buy flat-fee advertising here, waived during a trial period; homeowners never pay or receive anything.

Postwar Houses Across Tallmadge, OH

Tallmadge, OH grew about 69% between 1940 and 1950 and about 76% over the following decade. Census survey data show the result: the typical home dates to about 1971, about 16% went up in the 1950s and about 22% in the 1960s, the busiest single decade. About 7% predate 1940 and about 4% date from the 1940s, so roughly 27% are older than 1960; about 14% came from 2000 to 2009.

Of the 7,676 homes, about 74% are detached, and about 83% are owner-occupied, one of the highest shares among the five towns. The city has 18,521 residents (2025 estimate) and a median home value of $232,500. A 2000s basement can differ a lot from a 1960s one, and not every house has a basement at all; this page is for owners, landlords included, whose homes do.

Basement Fixes Around Tallmadge, OH

  • Early poured walls. Concrete from the 1960s can develop shrinkage cracks that stay dry for years, then weep; see foundation crack repair.
  • Window wells and corners. Wells that fill with leaves and water often show up as stains under the sill; see basement leak repair.
  • Interior drain systems. A channel under the slab edge carries water to a sump; see basement waterproofing.
  • Where the pump empties. Point discharge outside, away from walls and the house next door, never into a sewer line, laundry tub or floor drain; see sump pump installation.

High Ground and Wet Seasons in Tallmadge, OH

At about 1,194 feet, Tallmadge, OH stands above much of the surrounding area across about 14 square miles. Height keeps a river away, not water already in the soil. Glacial till covers much of northeastern Ohio, and a till soil common here, first described in Summit County, sits over a compact layer that sheds water slowly; from fall into spring, water can collect close to the surface and lean on basement walls.

On April 1, 2026, the National Weather Service put Summit County under a flood warning as streams kept rising after earlier rain, and the City passed the warning along to residents through its alert system.

Two Sewer Districts in Tallmadge, OH

Sewer service in Tallmadge, OH is split in two. District I is kept up by the City, and its wastewater flows to Akron's treatment plant; District II belongs to Summit County's Department of Sanitary Sewer Services (DSSS). Your sewer bill shows which serves a house; if unsure, ask the City. Water coming up a floor drain points to a backup rather than seepage: in the City district, report it to the Water & Sewer Department at (330) 633-0851; in the County district, DSSS takes it at (330) 926-2400 or the sewer-emergency line, 1-800-828-2087.

Building permits come from Summit County Building Standards, (330) 630-7280, the office at 1030 E. Tallmadge Ave. in Akron. For zoning, check with the City of Tallmadge, and ask the city whether contractors must register there. The contractor confirms which permits a project needs before work starts. Connecting a sump to any drain, or adding a backwater valve, is a licensed plumber's job under its own permit.

Tallmadge, OH FAQ

How old is Tallmadge?

The Reverend David Bacon founded it in 1807, laying the town out around a central square, and named it for Benjamin Tallmadge, a Revolutionary War figure and landowner. It began as "Town 2, Range 10" in the Connecticut Western Reserve and was incorporated in 1936.

What is the Circle?

Bacon's square is now Tallmadge Circle, a hub where eight roads come together like spokes and State Routes 91 and 261 cross. In Tallmadge Circle Park stand Historic Tallmadge Church, finished in 1825, and the 1859 Old Town Hall.

Does Ohio license basement waterproofing?

No. Ohio licenses trades such as plumbing and electrical work, but not waterproofing, so the checking falls to you: insurance certificates, references and a written contract listing the work, materials, price and payment schedule. Never pay the whole amount before the work is done.

Can I back out after signing?

For a sale made at your home, you may have until midnight on the third business day after signing to back out, though Ohio excludes some sales. The contract should explain the steps. Complaints go to the Ohio Attorney General's Consumer Protection Section.

Other Towns Close By

Cuyahoga Falls, OH maintains about 135 miles of its own sanitary sewer, and Green, OH relies on County sewers where they reach.

Request an Estimate

Registered with the City first

In Akron, any contractor doing work that needs a permit has to register with the City before starting. Ask whether yours has, check with the Plans & Permits Center (330-375-2010), and ask who will take out the Summit County permit.

Backup or seepage?

Sewage coming up a floor drain in a storm is a sewer backup, not groundwater. Report it to your sewer provider first, then sort out the basement.

Three business days to reconsider

Ohio generally lets you cancel a contract you signed at home until midnight of the third business day afterward. Before signing, make sure the written contract lists the work, the price and the payment schedule and says how to cancel.
